What is Microneedling?

When over-the-counter skin care products are no longer proving effective, but you aren't ready for surgery, learn more about minimally invasive treatments to rejuvenate the skin, like microneedling. Dr. Travis James is pleased to perform microneedling (collagen induction therapy) at our office in Providence, UT. Microneedling uses several fine needles to effectively and safely make micro-injuries in the needed areas of the skin. The micro-injuries created with the Dermapen® microneedling technology prompt the natural production of elastin and collagen. These two nutrients then contribute to the health and appearance of your complexion. Often performed with other skin treatments, like vitamin serums or PRP (platelet-rich plasma), microneedling can help reduce stretch marks, scars, and pores. Schedule a consultation at Providence Dermatology to learn more about the benefits of microneedling and ways to personalize your treatment for your needs and goals.

How is Microneedling Performed?

Collagen induction therapy with Dermapen microneedling is done in a treatment room for around 30 – 60 minutes with local anesthesia or numbing cream if preferred, but most patients feel mild or no pain and discomfort. The skin being treated will be cleaned before the microneedling handpiece is passed evenly over. Once the microneedling is done, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or a serum with a vitamin infusion may be applied for deeper penetration of the nutrients into the skin. A moisturizer will be massaged in along with sun protection because the treated skin will be more sensitive after the procedure.

At Providence Dermatology, we recommend microneedling for individuals who would like the below benefits:

  • Low-risk, nonsurgical procedure option
  • Minimization of scar tissue, dark spots, or stretch marks
  • Improved feel and appearance of skin
  • Minimized look of loose skin, fine lines, and age

I rarely post reviews but Dr. James and Providence Dermatology definitely deserve one! We have needed his assistance more than once in the past year and he is always so helpful and professional. My little boy ended up with poison ivy of all things and he was so miserable. Dr. James immediately helped him get some medicine to ease the discomfort and then got him going on the medicine needed to help him heal up. He explains things well, is fun with our kids, and his office is always clean with a great staff. We won’t go anywhere else.

Is Microneedling Right for Me?

You could be a candidate for microneedling if you have light or mild skin problems, like a decrease in firmness or an uneven texture. This procedure may also reduce the appearance of stretch marks, scars, and pores. You must be willing to wait before seeing improvements from your microneedling treatment because the collagen and elastin will need time to have an impact on the complexion; however, you will develop results that look natural and gain healthier, stronger skin.

Get Smoother, Firmer Skin

Enhance the health and appearance of your complexion with Dermapen microneedling collagen induction therapy at Providence Dermatology in Providence, UT. A minimally invasive treatment that may produce dramatic results, microneedling prompts your natural collagen production for smoother, firmer skin. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Travis James to learn more about this procedure and other skin-revitalizing treatments.

What exactly is microneedling?

Collagen induction therapy, or microneedling, is a minimally invasive treatment to improve the health of your skin. A natural fibrous protein, collagen helps your skin stay supple, smooth, and firm. As you get older, your natural supply of collagen is reduced, and your skin becomes thin and loses elasticity. Microneedling creates small skin wounds. These micro-injuries prompt your skin to generate new skin cell growth and increase collagen production. After a short recovery period, your skin looks firmer, brighter, and healthier.

Can I combine other treatments with microneedling?

In the process of microneedling, channels are made that make it easier for treatments to reach the deeper layers. That's why microneedling is commonly done before other skin treatments, like special serums or platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Microneedling plus PRP is more commonly known as a vampire facial. In your initial consultation, Dr. James will talk about what treatments would enhance your microneedling and which can help your skin's health.

How many treatments are recommended for optimal results?

Usually, patients receive 3 – 6 microneedling sessions to achieve their best results. However, how many sessions you require will depend on the condition of your skin and your goals. Microneedling may be safely done every 4 – 6 weeks as needed. In your initial consultation, Dr. James will be able to estimate how many sessions you will need based on your skin and goals. When your skin goals are reached, Dr. James recommends scheduling maintenance treatments two times a year.
