What is Skin Cancer?

People who have spent time in the sun or in tanning beds can develop skin cancer. Skin cancers are abnormal growths that can appear on the skin. When caught in the early stages, skin cancer is highly treatable. At Providence Dermatology, Dr. Travis James specializes in the detection and treatment of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers, including:

  • Basal cell carcinoma (BCC): As the most common type of cancer, BCC can develop anywhere on the body and may appear as a pink, flesh-colored, or pearl-like bump.
  • Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC): This is the second most common type of skin cancer. Forming on skin that gets the most sun exposure, SCC appears as scaly patches; red, firm bumps; and/or sores that frequently reopen.
  • Melanoma: Melanoma often begins as a dark growth or as a sudden change to an existing mole. Dr. James uses the ABCDs to identify melanoma — asymmetry, border, color, and diameter. Since melanoma has the potential to spread to other parts of the body, it should be treated promptly.
  • Actinic Keratosis: Also called solar keratosis. Actinic keratosis appears as rough scaly patch of skin that could possibly become cancerous if left untreated.

Dr. James utilizes surgical options as well as non-surgical options like liquid nitrogen, topical chemotherapy agents, and Omnilux PDT™ photodynamic therapy technology to treat certain non-melanoma skin lesions. This device employs a combination of pure light, red light, and blue light to safely treat your skin. What Are the Causes of Skin Cancer?

Most cases of skin cancer are triggered by ultraviolet radiation damage to the DNA within skin cells that controls their turnover and growth. This type of UV-ray damage is caused by overexposure to the sun and the use of tanning beds. You may have heard that "there is no such thing as a safe tan," and this is unfortunately true. Skin cancers may also develop without any UV-ray damage; having fair skin, many moles, or a family history of skin cancer are also risk factors. The most important things you can do to prevent skin cancer are to avoid long-term sun exposure, wear sun-protective clothing, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen, never use tanning beds, and have annual skin exams.

How Is Skin Cancer Treated?

Skin cancer is usually first identified during a visual skin check. If any suspicious growths are present, Dr. James may remove a small sample to perform a biopsy to check for cancer or other skin conditions. Several surgical treatments may be recommended for a patient with skin cancer. Simple excision removes cancerous tissue and is an ideal choice for cancer that hasn't spread. Mohs surgery is used for more advanced cases. Cancerous growths are removed in thin layers and examined under a microscope to determine how healthy the tissue is. This technique allows us to slowly remove cancerous cells while sparing as much healthy skin as possible.

Omnilux PDT may be recommended for treating certain forms of skin cancer. This straightforward treatment uses pulses of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to target specific levels of the skin. The skin absorbs the light, which then encourages cellular regeneration and collagen production.

I was in a big rush because I had a class to get to, and the staff and doctor were super understanding! They were incredibly helpful and friendly. I’ve been to several dermatologist offices and this is the best, by far!

Dr. James entire office is awesome!. The front desk ladies were kind and friendly from the beginning. Dr. James and his nurse Beth were really nice and didn’t make me feel rushed or like I was taking up their time. Then the next week Dr. James actually came to the phone and talked to me personally last week when my BP skyrocketed on the day of the cyst removals. He then rescheduled me to come in a week later to get my surgery done which was today. Dr. James and his nurse Beth made me feel like I was the most special patient that was in that day! They reassured me through the entire procedure and told me to call if I had any questions or concerns after I got home. And you know what? I actually feel that I really could call them if I need to!

Best Dermatologist in the valley. My daughters had skin issue and no one could figure it out but Dr James did. My son was born preemie and had so many medical issues. Dr James was the first doctor to just sit with me and explain as much as he could even things outside of his field. His knowledge is vast in the medical field. When no one would help he did. I cannot recommend him enough!
