Warts are a common skin condition usually seen on the hands, fingers, and near the nails. They generally look like small, fleshy peas but may differ in size. It is also common for warts to develop in groups near the knees and elbows. Warts are caused by HPV, otherwise known as the human papillomavirus. Although warts are harmless for the most part, they may be unsightly and bothersome. Store-bought wart removal treatments are usually not strong enough, which is why Dr. Travis James provides wart removal at his office in Providence, UT. When you have a wart or other skin growth you want to be removed, schedule a consultation with Dr. James at Providence Dermatology.
What Are the Symptoms of Warts?
Warts typically appear as small, rough, flesh-colored bumps on the skin and are most commonly found on the hands, fingers, and around the nails. They can vary in size and may have a grainy or cauliflower-like texture. Some warts develop tiny black dots in the center, which are small, clotted blood vessels. While warts are usually painless, they can become tender if located in areas that experience frequent pressure, such as the soles of the feet. It’s also common for warts to develop in clusters, especially around the elbows, knees, or hands, and while they are generally harmless, many people seek removal when they become bothersome or unsightly.
What Causes Warts?
Skin warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and are commonly spread through direct skin contact. They can also develop after touching objects contaminated by the virus, such as gym equipment or towels. Warts are more likely to occur through cuts or scrapes, making areas frequently shaved — like the legs, face, or underarms — more susceptible.
What are Treatment Options for Wart Removal?
Even after your first therapy, warts may reoccur so it is necessary to get the best treatment to minimize future outbreaks. Freezing a wart is a common treatment and can be done with success. With this method, Dr. James applies liquid nitrogen to the wart. A blister will form around it and the dead tissues will fall off in a week. Another option is applying cantharidin, a substance that can cause skin redness when applied to a wart. This chemical is applied to the skin to create a blister around the wart — it's a popular therapy since the application causes little to no pain. Burning (electrosurgery) or freezing with cryotherapy may also be used, in addition to curetting (scraping) or excising (cutting) the wart. Laser treatments, chemical peels, immunotherapy, or bleomycin injections are also used for treatment when the wart is hard to remove.

About UsWarts FAQs
What factors can trigger the reappearance of warts after they've been removed?
Warts may reappear after treatment due to the persistence of the HPV virus in the skin. If the virus remains in the skin cells after a wart is removed, it can cause new warts to form, especially if the immune system isn't fully able to fight off the virus. Factors such as stress, illness, or other conditions that weaken the immune system can increase the likelihood of warts returning. Additionally, not following post-treatment care instructions, such as avoiding trauma to the treated area, can also contribute to the recurrence of warts.
How long can warts last if left untreated?
The duration of warts can vary significantly. Some warts may disappear on their own within a few months, while others can persist for years if left untreated. The body's immune response plays a crucial role in determining how long a wart will last. In some cases, the immune system may eventually recognize and destroy the virus, leading to the wart's disappearance. However, in other cases, the virus may remain dormant in the skin, causing the wart to persist or even spread.
Why do warts sometimes appear in clusters?
Warts can appear in clusters due to the way HPV spreads on the skin. When the virus infects a particular area, it can cause multiple warts to develop close to one another, resulting in a cluster. This is especially common with plantar warts on the feet, where pressure from walking can cause the virus to spread to nearby skin. Clusters of warts can be more challenging to treat because they cover a larger area and may require more intensive or repeated treatments.
